| He's only 4 years old,
but Bryce Morin has undergone a whopping 23 surgeries in his young life. The first one
happened 14 weeks before his birth. Bryce was born with a rare condition called prune belly syndrome, which is characterized by the absence of abdominal muscles. Bryce's was a textbook case; his stomach literally looked like a wrinkled prune. He also had an enlarged bladder, flared lower ribs, severe swelling of the ureters (tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder), and many other complications. As the weeks and months passed, Bryce underwent numerous surgeries and medical procedures, battling breathing problems, chronic pneumonia, a kidney mass and a sudden stroke along the way. When he was 16 months old, Bryce was finally strong enough to take on his most difficult surgery to date: a complicated operation to reverse his potbelly appearance, large bladder and flared ribs. Since the surgery, Bryce has soared. These days he's ready to take on anything, happily following his hero, Buzz Lightyear, "To infinity and beyond!" |
